We did not leave because love died;
the world grew wide on either side.
War kept our hands beyond their reach,
and longing bruised our tender speech.

We argued when we needed care,
then left too much unsaid, in air.
Until the silence seemed to be
a safer place than you and me.
Now other footsteps share our days,
yet memory turns through familiar ways.
A song, a scent, the evening blue—
and something still returns to you.

So let me learn to hold this ache
without demanding what you cannot make.
To wish you peace, to let you grow,
though where you go, I may not go.
And those who walk beside us now
deserve the truth our hearts allow.
No soul is ours to bind or claim;
no grief requires a life of blame.
If we should meet, let kindness speak
the words our wounded hearts were too weak
to offer then. If paths stay apart,
may peace find room within each heart.
I light a lamp as day departs—
for your wellbeing, for both our hearts.
And sit until its quiet glow
warms what I am learning to let go.
